SPFL Acts Swiftly, Fires Chinese Supervisor Over Assault Incident at LNG Site

An independent investigation has confirmed that Sterling Petrochemical Fertilizer Limited (SPFL) took swift and decisive action following a viral video showing a brief altercation between a Chinese supervisor and a Nigerian welder at the CC14 LNG project site. The incident, which occurred on October 6, 2025, sparked widespread discussion on social media and prompted an immediate independent review by this reporter..
Findings from the investigation reveal that the Chinese supervisor, Mr. Wei Xue Qinq, had developed a habit of tapping or lightly striking the helmets of welders to get their attention during work. While some colleagues viewed the gesture as an unconventional supervisory style, it was deemed unprofessional and against the company’s workplace conduct policy.
According to credible sources within SPFL, the altercation occurred when Mr. Samuel Okon, one of the welders, reacted angrily after being tapped on the helmet by Mr. Wei. The exchange quickly turned physical before fellow workers intervened. Although the situation was contained within minutes, a short video clip recorded by another worker was later shared online, generating strong reactions.
SPFL management immediately launched an investigation to ascertain the facts.
A senior management official confirmed that the company was “deeply concerned and disappointed” by the supervisor’s behaviour once the incident came to light. “That kind of conduct is unacceptable under our policies, no matter the nationality or rank of the employee,” the source said.
The findings established that while the act was not intended as an assault, it still constituted a breach of professional boundaries. SPFL therefore terminated the employment of Mr. Wei Xue Qinq for misconduct. In a show of compassion and fairness, the company also approved paid medical leave for Mr. Okon and took full responsibility for his treatment, pending his recovery and return to work.
SPFL’s spokesperson, responding to the public reaction, reaffirmed the company’s position: “SPFL operates a zero-tolerance policy for any form of physical contact or aggression in the workplace. The prompt action taken reflects our commitment to employee welfare, fairness, and corporate responsibility.”
Independent findings from the investigation also show that the company’s handling of the case has been widely commended by staff and industry observers. Many described SPFL’s response as “firm but balanced,” noting that the company prioritized both justice and humanity in its decision.
A worker who witnessed the incident told investigators, “Management didn’t waste time. They called both of them in, reviewed what happened, and acted immediately. Everyone now feels more confident that the company listens and protects us.”
Beyond the disciplinary measures, SPFL has begun reviewing its internal supervision protocols and worker engagement procedures. The company has also announced plans to strengthen cultural orientation programmes for foreign staff and improve communication channels for Nigerian employees to report grievances without fear.
Labour relations experts have lauded the company’s proactive response as a model for conflict resolution in a multicultural workplace. One industrial consultant said, “SPFL’s quick and transparent action prevented a potentially damaging situation. They demonstrated fairness and accountability, which is what responsible corporate management should look like.”
As of this report, Mr. Okon remains on recovery leave and has expressed gratitude to the company for supporting him during his treatment. The management has assured him of a smooth return to duty once certified fit.
